Once functioning as a catalyst for societal evolution, unequal access to resources has ultimately inhibited progress. Although material wealth is the most obvious example, this growing list of resources includes education, location, technology, political beliefs, values, cultural upbringing, ancestry and race.
100% features works by Tate Foley that explore human relationships through the filter of accessibility to these resources. When equal access is available to the entire society, social progress and collaboration can flourish. All to often, however, small contingencies of the populace seize and restrict these avenues of access for personal gain. Meanwhile, a growing segment of the population has been stripped of this accessibility, turning what could have been a keystone into a wedge.
Foley creates 2-dimensional works, artist’s books, and objects that exemplify the schism between classes. 100% glorifies differences, shows similarities between two seemingly disparate factions, and asks viewers to confront these schisms head on. He was born in Millerton, a small rural town in Northcentral Pennsylvania. He currently lives and works in St. Louis, Missouri, where he is an Assistant Professor of Art/Visiting Artist at the Leigh Gerdine College of Fine Arts at Webster University. In 2007, he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art from Lycoming College in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, and in 2010, he earned a Master of Fine Arts in Printmaking from the Lamar Dodd School of Art at the University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia. He has exhibited extensively across the United States, including recent solo and group shows in New York City, Washington, DC, Portland, St. Louis, and Cleveland. He has been a visiting artist at Georgia College and State University and Piedmont College in Athens, Georgia.
